The Boys and Girls Club helped me develop my leadership skills by giving me opportunities to be proactive around the club. My mother and father have always encouraged me to offer a hand to people. Helping anyone in need has been a passion of mine since I was young. I had always volunteered, given out snacks, and even asked the staff like Mr. Mike if he or anyone needed any help because I simply felt like I could benefit them and do good.

Growing up, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego was never simply an after-school program to me. It was the foundation of my childhood, a second home that shaped my understanding of resilience, compassion, leadership, and community. From before kindergarten through my senior year of high school, I spent nearly my entire life surrounded by mentors, friendships, and opportunities that continuously challenged me to grow into the person I am today.

The Boys and Girls Club gave me a place to grow in so many ways, whether it was setting small goals in sports, learning how to advocate and be a leader, or working on teamwork. Moving forward, I carry a deep sense of purpose, confidence, and the steadfast belief that I can create lasting change at the Club, in the community, and in my own future.

I realize none of this would have been possible had I not stepped on to the pool deck that hot summer day in June at the Boys and Girls Club eleven years ago. I can remember clinging to my mom as we entered the Club area, unsure of what was ahead. The pool was noisy, as most pools usually are, but I hardly noticed.

To me, the Boys & Girls Club is a place where kids can truly be themselves. It is a safe and welcoming environment where friendships are built, confidence grows, and every child feels supported. Whether at the main clubhouse or the Ocean Knoll site, the Club became a second home that helped me become the person I am today.
