From Dial-Up to the Cloud: Celebrating Three Decades of IT Leadership

Jun 16, 2026 | Leadership & Culture

Remember floppy disks? Dial-up internet? AOL email addresses?

Our IT team does.

Meet Vianka (29 years) and Abe (25 years), our IT dream team who have spent nearly three decades helping the Club navigate every era of technology.

When they first started, technology looked very different. Internet access was slow dial-up, computers were hardwired, and data was often stored on floppy disks before flash drives even existed. Early membership and operational systems relied on COBOL-based databases and manual data collection methods, where information was entered and maintained through much more time-intensive processes than we can imagine today. Email was basic and limited, networking was still developing, and keeping systems connected across locations required constant hands-on work.

Over the years, they helped lead the Club through massive technological change — from dial-up to high-speed Wi-Fi, from physical servers and local storage to cloud-based systems, Microsoft platforms, and modern cybersecurity practices. They supported the transition from paper-heavy processes and legacy databases into integrated digital membership systems, online reporting, and networked operations that keep every branch connected and efficient today.

Because of their leadership and adaptability, youth across the Club now have access to modern technology for afterschool programs, including updated computer labs, digital learning tools, modern Microsoft systems, and technology-focused curriculum that prepares members for today’s world. Through partnerships and support from generous donors and nonprofit technology organizations like HP, TechSoup, and nonprofit technology portals, the Club has continued expanding access to high-quality technology resources for the youth and families we serve.

Now, the Club operates with modern infrastructure supporting hundreds of networked devices, reliable wireless connectivity, cloud platforms, and national BGCA programs enhanced by modern technology curriculums and digital learning tools for youth.

Thank you, Vianka and Abe, for being there every step of the way, helping our Club evolve while keeping us connected, protected, and moving forward.

Thank you both for your incredible dedication, adaptability, and decades of service. 💙👏
