“I first joined the Boys and Girls Club in 2020 when I started 7th grade because my parents had different work schedules and needed me to attend the after-school program. After spending most of 6th grade in quarantine, I struggled with social and communication skills, making the start of middle school overwhelming and stressful. At first, I was nervous to talk to new people and had a difficult time adjusting to the club since I was so used to being around family instead of strangers. However, as time went on, the Boys and Girls Club became a safe and comforting place for me. I slowly began opening up, making new friends, connecting with staff, and feeling more confident around others.
The Boys and Girls Club helped me develop my leadership skills by giving me opportunities to be proactive around the club. My mother and father have always encouraged me to offer a hand to people. Helping anyone in need has been a passion of mine since I was young. I had always volunteered, given out snacks, and even asked the staff like Mr. Mike if he or anyone needed any help because I simply felt like I could benefit them and do good.

Starting middle school, I always wanted older friends I could look up to and rely on for advice about school. After some negative experiences trying to connect with older students, I realized I could help change that pattern by being welcoming to younger kids instead. The following summer, I joined a Boys and Girls Club camp where I met incoming 6th graders and helped them feel more comfortable by sharing advice about the school, teachers, and places to spend time on campus. Since then, I’ve stayed close with many of them, and our friendships have continued to grow despite the age difference. I hope the kindness and support I showed them encourages them to do the same for younger students in the future.

After all of my experiences with the Boys and Girls Club, I have learned so much both about myself and the people around me. I have learned the importance of showing kindness in every situation, whether through helping others, listening, or simply making someone feel included. The club has taught me how to become a mentor for my younger peers by guiding them in the right direction while also building genuine friendships with them. Through these experiences, I have developed stronger communication, leadership, and responsibility skills that I know will help me in the future. I have also met amazing friends and supportive staff members who have encouraged me and helped me grow throughout my journey. Most importantly, the Boys and Girls Club has become more than just a place I attend. It has become a second family and a community where I feel supported, valued, and connected.”
