After School Program | Griset Clubhouse
“What if the place you spent ten years growing up became more than just an after-school program — what if it became your second home?
For ten years, the Boys & Girls Club has been that place for me. It became more than somewhere I went after school — it became a place filled with friendship, laughter, support, and memories that shaped who I am today.
To me, the Boys & Girls Club is a place where kids can truly be themselves. It is a safe and welcoming environment where friendships are built, confidence grows, and every child feels supported. Whether at the main clubhouse or the Ocean Knoll site, the Club became a second home that helped me become the person I am today.
Some of my favorite memories come from the Ocean Knoll Clubhouse. I remember solving riddles and even teaching staff how to properly shuffle cards. Even during COVID, when life felt uncertain and difficult, the Club gave me a sense of normalcy, fun, and belonging.
Like many young people, I have faced moments of self-doubt and challenges while growing up. But the Boys & Girls Club always encouraged me to keep going and believe in myself. The Club taught me lessons that go far beyond the classroom — kindness, respect, honesty, leadership, and compassion.
The staff were never just supervisors. They were mentors and role models who truly cared about every child. Ms. Imelda taught responsibility while always making us feel safe and cared for. Ms. Sara brought creativity and joy through arts and crafts projects like bracelets and lanyards. Mrs. Chris Ann created a welcoming environment where every member felt included, valued, and supported.
As I got older, the Club gave me opportunities to become a leader. In middle school, I joined “Torch Club” which is a community service leadership program the Boys and Girls Club offers. I then became Secretary and through Torch Club, I learned teamwork, communication, and the importance of giving back to my community.
I helped with events like the Annual Pancake Breakfast, Youth of the Year, and the Drive-Through Santa program, where we handed out toys and gift bags to families during the holidays. Now, as a volunteer, I get to help younger members feel encouraged and valued, just like the staff once did for me. Seeing younger kids smile, gain confidence, and feel included reminds me why the Club is so important.
Looking back, I realize the Boys & Girls Club has given me so much more than memories. It has given me confidence, leadership skills, lifelong friendships, and a community that has always believed in me.
I hope to inspire younger members to believe in themselves, overcome challenges, and achieve great things.
No matter how much I grow or where life takes me, the Boys & Girls Club will always be a part of who I am.”
