Covid-19
Our COVID-19 Response and Reopening
We continue to do whatever it takes to keep our doors open and serve the youth and families in our community as the pandemic continues to fluctuate.
Mask status
On the heels of the revised State masking guidelines, we have made the decision to align our policy with San Diego County’s updated guidelines for schools and childcare. For our programs and facilities, effective March 14th, 2022, masks are no longer a requirement for employees, program participants or patrons inside any of our facilities. Masks will be optional. We remain supportive of participants, patrons and employees regardless of their masking choice.
From Obstacles to Optimism
March of 2020 marked the first time in 55 years that we were forced to close our doors.
Our staff rallied, making the necessary adjustments to continue to serve our members both virtually and in person. We became a central resource where our members and their families could obtain food, vital pandemic information, virtual programming, critical education, and emotional support.
Three short months later, we safely re-opened our doors in June 2020 and were more connected to our community than ever.
We continue to do whatever it takes throughout the COVID-19 crisis to ensure the youth and families who need us most have the resources and support to survive and thrive during this uncertain time.
Connecting Kids To Virtual Learning
When the pandemic hit, we were forced to close our doors. With limited resources and
time, we quickly expanded our practices to fill in the gap. Our After School Program and specialty departments created at-home virtual programming, workouts, resources, and more including:
- Free virtual tutoring
- Weekly Zoom activities covering our core program areas
- Emotional support and activity videos on our Vimeo page
- Cooking, art, dance, and science activities
- Bulldogs Basketball dribble and skill challenges via Instagram
- Virtual music lessons through our Youth Arts Academy
- Weekly workouts from our RSD Swim Team via Instagram and Facebook
- Learning Lessons for youth aged 2-6 years old from our Carmel Valley Montessori School via our Vimeo page
- Tips on how to talk to your child about COVID-19
Reimagining the Club Experience
As guidelines were set and restrictions began to lift, we redesigned our in-person programs and reopened our doors to serve the youth in our community.
We’ve always been a home away from home, we now became a school away from school. Our newly created Back2Clubs program became “Learning Centers” for full-day care and essential learning support while schools remained closed. We were able to prevent learning loss by providing enrichment programs to keep kids on track.
children and teens participated weekly in our Back2Clubs, Hybrid, or ASP programs which safely provided extended learning support, physical activity and social interaction at 5 of our Clubhouses
total registered members in our Back2Clubs, Hybrid, ASP programs, and specialty programs
total youth served through all of our programs and services combined
food drives were hosted for local families
hours of virtual music education and enrichment were provided through our Youth Arts Academy
young athletes participated in our Athletics programs including Bulldogs Basketball and BIG 8 Middle School Sports
youth participated in our swim lessons or our RSD Swim Team monthly

A Look Behind the Mask
“The academic support was great, but the true accomplishment was the social/emotional support that was provided during a time that had a lot of unknowns.”
One of our families recounts their experience with our Club during the pandemic.

“Our two sons, ages six and nine, have both attended Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego’s after-school program at Ocean Knoll since they were in kindergarten. When COVID-19 hit and our sons were sent home from school, it was quite a shocking change to everything that our sons knew and loved. As schools reopened in a hybrid model, there were many considerations for what our sons could do on the days that they weren’t able to attend school. We are so happy that we chose to stick with the support that the Club has always provided for our family. Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego worked with the district to offer support for distance learning on the days that our boys were unable to be on campus.
Our sons attended the Club three days a week for support with distance learning. The staff supported our children in an organized way by helping them complete their daily academic assignments and sending home a daily communication sheet for us as parents to review and ensure that our boys were on track academically. As a result, both of our sons have stayed on track throughout distance learning and are meeting or surpassing all their academic requirements.
The academic support was great, but the true accomplishment was the social/emotional support that was provided during a time that had a lot of unknowns. As a parent, I felt supported and was able to have my questions answered quickly by consistent and familiar staff. For our sons, they had the opportunity to go to their school site daily with friends and familiar staff and have a consistent routine, which made them feel happy and supported. I can honestly say that amidst a lot of unknowns and lack of consistency, they felt very little impact because they were with people who knew them and cared about them.
The Club and their amazing staff have done an exemplary job supporting us as parents and our sons during a difficult time. We are extremely grateful to the Club for providing the consistency and care that has been so important for our children and their educational progress and well-being. As parents, we feel so lucky to have a place that our boys feel at home! Thank you Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego!”
