Through our Athletics Department, we offer a dynamic lineup of 10 sports across the fall, winter, and spring seasons—giving students the chance to compete, grow, and thrive on and off the field.

What You Need to Know
Before you hit the court or field, here’s everything families need to know about joining a Big 8 Middle School Sports team:
8-Week Season, 3 Days a Week
Most teams practice on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Exceptions: Boys Volleyball, Club Sports (Pickleball and Running Club), and Golf practice 2 days a week.
Refund Policy
Cut Sports: No refunds are given once the team is selected. Credit cards are only charged if your student makes the team.
No-Cut Sports: Full price due up front. Notify Boys & Girls Clubs by the end of the first week of practice if you want a refund. No refunds will be given after the first week of practice.
Convenient After-School Practices
Most practices are held on school campuses right after school ends.
Exceptions: Boys Volleyball and Golf
Plan Your Transportation
Families are responsible for transportation to and from practices and games.
Game Play
Games, matches, or meets typically begin 3–4 weeks into the season. Most Games are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm. Boys Volleyball Games are Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:45-5:45pm.
Playing Time is Not Guaranteed
Playing time is earned through attitude, effort, and sportsmanship. We value commitment, teamwork and respect.
Online Registration is Required
All athletes must register online before tryouts or practices. Athletes will not be allowed to participate if they are not registered.

Win or lose, always demonstrate respect, grace, and dignity. Treat coaches, fans, officials, opponents, staff, and teammates with courtesy and sportsmanship at all times.

Does my student need to be registered to try out?
Yes, all students must be registered online before tryouts for liability reasons. If a student is not registered, they cannot try out.
Does it cost money to try out for the team?
No, there’s no fee to try out. Credit cards are only charged if your student makes the team, and no refunds are given once the team is selected.
Where can I register my student?
Please visit your child’s school page. Registration typically opens one month before tryouts and must be completed one day before tryouts.
Does my student need to attend all tryout days to be eligible to make the team?
No, students only need to attend one tryout day, though attending more is encouraged.
What if my student tries out but decides not to play?
Send an email to athletics@bgcgreatertogether.org. Please include your student’s full name, their school, and the sport.
Will I get a refund if my student no longer wants to play after making the team?

How many people make the team?
- Flag Football: 18-20
- Volleyball: 10-12

When are practices?
Practices are on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, starting the week after tryouts. Check your child’s school page for specific times.
When are games/matches/meets?
Most games are played on Tuesdays and Thursday from 4-6pm.
Boys Volleyball is on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:45-5:45pm.
Game schedules will be shared on the website as soon as they are officially posted.
Do teams practice on game days?
No, there are no practices on game days.
Do teams practice if there is no school?
No, practice follows the school district’s schedule, so there’s no practice on holidays or closures.
Do I need to provide transportation?
Yes, parents are responsible for transportation to and from practices and games.
Can my child leave school early for away games?
It’s up to the parent, but students won’t be penalized if they arrive late from staying in class.
What sports can a 6th grader play?
6th graders can participate in the Big 8 “No-Cut” sports, including cross country, running, and track and field. They compete with 7th graders.
What is the player's code of conduct?

How will I know about schedule changes?
Schedule updates will be sent via email and the Sports Engine app. Schools will also be notified about any schedule changes.
What happens if there is bad weather before or during practices/games?
Weather updates will be emailed by noon on rainy or extremely hot days. Games will be rescheduled if possible. Cancelled practices due to weather won’t be made up unless it becomes excessive.
