Celebrating Abilities, Building Independence: ROADs and Down Syndrome Awareness Month

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the unique strengths, talents, and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome while promoting inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity for all. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego, we are proud to support adults with diverse abilities through our Real Options for Adults with Disabilities (ROADs) program, creating meaningful opportunities for growth, independence, and connection every day.

Fourteen years ago, before the merger that formed Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego, Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside and MiraCosta College recognized a growing need in the community. Adults with special needs who had aged out of the school system often faced limited opportunities for continued learning, social engagement, and personal development. Together, they created ROADs, a community-based program designed to empower adults with disabilities and help them thrive.

Today, ROADs serves 45 members across our Oceanside and Harper Clubhouses with the support of 11 dedicated instructors under the leadership of Director Annie Kesselhaut. The program provides individualized plans that help members build self-sufficiency, strengthen social and community skills, and develop confidence in their everyday lives. From self-advocacy and problem-solving to relationship-building and personal growth, every member’s journey is uniquely tailored to their goals and interests.

Unlike traditional classroom-based programs, ROADs takes learning into the community. Members spend their days exploring local resources, visiting libraries, malls, gyms, and the zoo, volunteering with community organizations, and practicing real-world skills in meaningful settings. These experiences help foster independence while building confidence, social connections, and practical life skills such as communication and money management.

“We want our members to feel accomplished and productive,” shares Annie Kesselhaut. That commitment is reflected in every aspect of the program.

For Program Instructor Mikey Banaag, the ability to personalize each member’s experience is what makes ROADs so impactful.

“Working with ROADs has been an amazing experience. The way we can tailor our programming to fit the needs and interests of our members is such a cherished thing.”

Program Instructor Rita Spiegel has witnessed remarkable transformations during her time with ROADs.

“I have seen members who were very shy come out of their shells, create relationships, and express their feelings with staff and other members. I have seen members who don’t talk when they arrive begin laughing and talking more and more.”

These moments of growth remind us why programs like ROADs are so important. During Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we celebrate not only the accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome, but also the power of inclusive communities that recognize potential, foster independence, and create opportunities for everyone to thrive.

“I’m grateful for the team we’ve built and the culture of support we’ve created, where helping one another comes naturally. Each staff member brings unique strengths and expertise that everyone values and respects. I truly love my job.”

This Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we celebrate the achievements, resilience, and contributions of every ROADs member. Their determination, growth, and joy inspire us daily and remind us that when individuals are given the support and opportunities they deserve, there is no limit to what they can accomplish.
