November 2026 Lifeguard Training & Emergency Oxygen Course

8 hours class each day includes a 1 hour lunch break/ 15 minute break

Materials Provided With Course

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual
  • CPR Pocket Mask

Students must bring a towel, bathing suit, pocket mask, and lifeguard manual to all class dates.

This is course is IN-PERSON CLASS. You will be required to attend all dates or you will be dropped out of the lifeguard training course.

You will not be refunded for this course.

You will need to schedule a prerequisite in-water skills evaluation as soon as possible before the on-line content is emailed to you. Please email ARC instructor Kevin Sotelo at ksotelo@bgcgreatertogether.org to schedule your in-water skills evaluation.

Prerequisites

  • 1. Swim–tread–swim
    You must complete this without stopping to rest:
    • Jump into the water and completely submerge.
    • Resurface and swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of the two.
      • No swimming on your back or side.
      • Goggles are allowed.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.
    • Swim another 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination.
    That’s 200 yards of swimming total, plus the 2-minute leg-only tread.
  • 2. Timed rescue event — 1:40 maximum
    Starting in the water:
    1. Swim 20 yards — goggles are not allowed.
    2. Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to 7–10 feet.
    3. Retrieve a 10-pound object.
    4. Bring it to the surface.
    5. Swim 20 yards back on your back, holding the object at the surface with both hands, keeping your face at/near the surface.
    6. Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps.
    7. You must finish everything in 1 minute 40 seconds or less.
    You also have to be at least 15 years old by the last day of the course.

If you are unable to pass the prerequisite, you will be unable to take the course and will be refunded your registration fee.

If you pass the prerequisite, you will be handed a lifeguard manual and pocket mask.

  • To successfully complete the course, you must attend the entire course, participate in all skill sessions/drills, activities and scenarios, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, and pass the final written exams with a minimum grade of 80 %
